Two Walks for Visitors

1. A historical walk through the Village

2. A waterside walk around the Village

The Waterside Walk

A short walk that combines a waterside stroll along the banks of the River Dove with a meander through the old streets of historic Tutbury.

The walk starts from the Leopard Inn, just opposite the Duke Street car park. Walkers will receive a warm welcome at this pub, which is open from 11am to 11pm at weekends.

Dogs (on leads) and children are allowed inside and there are picnic tables outside.

The Walk

From the Leopard, turn right and walk up Castle Street.

Where Castle Street becomes Park Lane, go right onto a footpath between buildings to reach a couple of stiles onto open countryside.

You will descend the pastureland of Castle Hill and can proceed on a clear path, going over a footbridge and a couple of stiles to reach the River Dove.

At the river, go sharp right to cross a stile and reach an attractive weir. It is this weir that lets water into the Mill Fleam which in turn feeds the old cornmill situated on the other side of Tutbury.

Cross the footbridge to the weir and now walk a well worn path along the banks of the beautiful River Dove as it meanders east. There is a waymarked footpath to your right which runs by the water-plant covered Fleam, but the Dove’s river bank is a delightful alternative which has been walked for many years.

As you near the field hedge, the path veers right to a stile by Tutbury Cricket Pitch to enter a landscaped picnic area with car park. This is the site of Tutbury Mill, which once produced cotton and later converted gypsum into plaster. Walk along the entrance lane to reach the A511. Go right, to pass the road island and meander up Bridge Street into Tutbury.

Bear left to continue up High Street where you will see several listed buildings, pass Tutbury Mews and the Dog & Partridge Inn. At the end, opposite the Post office, turn right along Duke Street, pass the museum at the Charity House and return to the car park.
